What is Horsepower & Why Is It Important In A Vehicle?

Many people have heard the term horsepower. But what does horsepower really mean when checking out vehicles?

Horsepower is the amount of work a vehicle can output within a given time frame. Imagine a small bicycle rope attached to a 500-pound weight. Would you rather this tiny bicycle or an SUV or truck pulling this heavyweight? Horsepower is quickly moving heavyweight in a timely manner.

James Watt coined the term horsepower. He determined the average amount of weight a pony could pull and multiplied it by 150. After doing so he began advertising his steam engine as having the horsepower of multiple ponies moving a certain weight. His advertising worked, and now the term is still used to this day as a definition of vehicle power and prowess.
